Silverstone Anyone?

As a yachting photographer my feet are usually planted firmly on a rocking RIB! But when I get the chance to shoot something different I’ll normally jump at the opportunity. Motorsport isn’t a subject I’ve shot since the Rally of Cornwall, when I was a student many years ago, but I got the opportunity to try my hand at it again today. It was a feature for issue 2 of Watermark, the magazine for Princess Yachts and while I can’t say what the feature was about, it took me to Silverstone for the day. Here are a selection of images I shot of the GT3 Racing after my work for Princess was over.

Guns ‘n’ Ribs

It’s not everyday I do a shoot with a Police escort in attendance. But today was the first and hopefully the last I’ll have a gun pointed in my face! They weren’t real guns, but replicas, which had to be confirmed but the Hampshire Marine Police before we could commence shooting. The photos were for brochures and website images for X-Craft Marine, a company that will be using the special forces designed RIB for cooperate events and charter. As you can see it looks the business and act in the same way!

Etap in the East

One of the great things about the working on the water is that the water is always changing colour. Sometimes it’s the light on the water, other times it’s the colour of the seabed. On the East Coast of the UK it’s distinctly brown, this is due to the sediment in the water. On a bright breezy day from Brightlingsea we tested the new Etap 28 in some pretty rough conditions.

As the shoot was finishing there was one last shot I wanted to capture. I could see the dark storm cloud approaching from the south, I got the Etap to sail into a small patch of light and was able to get a shot with just the boat in the light and the dark menacing clouds in the background. It’s not often the weather is on your side, and the sun comes out, but when it is, it works well.

French Folly

The Jeanneau Prestige 50S might not have the supermodel looks of it’s rivals, but it’s a neat boat at a good price, so where better to test it than on the French Riviera?

Norwegian Wood

In the small Dorset seaside town of West Bay, if you’re lucky, you might find Sladers Yard, a rustic gallery and exhibition space and home to i tre Furniture. Norwegian Petter Southall and his team of craftsman create bespoke furniture by shaping, twisting and carving wood to form beautiful furnishings.

Sweet Swede

When it comes to yacht manufacturers the country of Sweden seem to have the lions share of high quality yachts. The small island or Orust on the West coast has more fine yachts builders than one could wave a finely shaped piece of mahogany at. One of the smaller family owned yachts crafters is Regina of Vindö. While we were there to test the Regina 35 for Yachting Monthly, we also had a chance to sail the larger Regina 43. Both yachts show the craftsmanship expected of Swedish yachts, built to make year round cruising a real possibility.

A day out with the RNLI

When it comes to work-boats I’d be pretty pushed to think of another genre that work as hard as a lifeboat. They don’t work every day, but when they have to, lifeboats are usually working at 100% in the worst conditions. So when the RNLI spend lots of money developing a new Tamar Class lifeboat, seeing what goes into the design, manufacture and testing of a lifeboat, it’s easy to see where the money goes. The Tamar has been tested in some seriously rough conditions and has come through the otherside. These were taken when the RNLI spent the day indroducing the Tamar Class to the press.

When the going gets rough

Once in a while a boat comes along that is so different it’s worth makning a fuss about. A case in point was the Westerly GK35. Not only have they re-introduced the Westerly name in to the yachting market, but they’ve done it in such an eye-catching way. The Ed Dubois 35 footer has a carbon fibre hull and silver deck, but it doesn’t end there. The interior is smart, clean and stylish. the qualities usually reserved for Italian sports cruisers. Because she’s carbon fibre, she’s light and fast. In a blow she really sends the spray flying!

What is it about the weather?

Sometimes I think the elements are conspiring against me. When I’m shooting yachts, I can end up with a lovely sunny day, and no wind, when I’m shooting motor boats I end up with too much wind. Not that it’s a problem, it just makes photographing them a lot harder. Add to the strong westerly wind a strong east going tide, and you end up wind against tide in the Solent. Great fun. Not that the subject of the shoot, the new Bavaria 42 Sport, had any trouble with the conditions, but the boat I was shooting from was a little too small for the job. Didn’t stop me getting some good pics though.

Hugh, Blu, Blarney and Brew….Yep It’s Ireland!

There’s something about Ireland that I love, may be it’s the unpredictable weather that makes you wonder whether the shoot will be a wash out. Or the early morning light that illuminates the vivid green landsacpe and makes photographs fall infront of me as I walk by. Whatever it is, Ireland is a great place and Kinsale is a gem in Southern Irelands crown. The food is fantastic, the craic is great and the weather doesn’t know what it’s doing, but hey, that’s Ireland!
